Plot



In Soul Eater, meister (職人 shokunin) Maka Albarn and her weapon partner Soul Eater are students at the Death Weapon Meister Academy (死神武器職人専門学校 Shinigami Buki Shokunin Senmon Gakkō?), or DWMA (死武専 Shibusen) for short, located in the fictional Death City,in Nevada, United States.The school has many other students including Black Star with his weapon partner Tsubaki, and Death the Kid with his twin weapon partners Liz and Patti. The school is run by Shinigami, Death himself, as a training facility for weapons and the human wielders of those weapons, the meisters.Maka's goal, along with the other meisters, is to have their weapons defeat and absorb the souls of ninety-nine evil humans and one witch, which will dramatically increase the power of the given weapon and thus be capable of being used by shinigami; these weapons are called Death Scythes.In the universe of Soul Eater, witches are powerful beings and the natural enemies of DWMA, as almost all of them have a destructive nature and almost all desire anarchy and chaos.

At the start of Soul Eater, Maka and Soul encounter the meister Crona and Crona's weapon Ragnarok; Crona is being forced to attack non-evil humans by Crona's mother and witch Medusa. Medusa eventually recruits the witches Eruka and Mizune, along with the immortal werewolf Free. Medusa and her cohorts attack DWMA on the eve of the festival to commemorate the establishment of DWMA. Medusa's goal is to revive the first "kishin" (鬼神),an evil demon god that nearly destroyed everything by plunging the world into madness,named Asura who was sealed beneath the DWMA by Shinigami. Medusa's group successfully revives Asura, though Medusa is seemingly killed in the process.

As Asura escapes the DWMA, the world is plunged into chaos and insanity, and because of this, Medusa's older sister Arachne comes out of hiding after 800 years. Arachne reforms her organization Arachnophobia, which poses itself as a serious threat to the DWMA; Arachne is joined closely by her demon butler Mosquito and demon weapon Giricco. The DWMA calls in the Death Scythes Justin Law, Yumi Azusa, and Marie Mjölnir to aide in the fight against Arachnophobia. During this time, Medusa is proven to be alive and possesses a young girl named Rachel. Maka and the other students are progressively getting stronger as they train and participate in various battles. Medusa makes a truce with the DWMA for a time so together they can annihilate the threat of Arachnophobia. Once Arachne is killed by Maka, Medusa betrays the DWMA and takes possession of Arachne's previously discarded body, regaining her lost strength. Following Arachne's defeat, Maka finally succeeds in making Soul into a Death Scythe.

During the infiltration of castle Baba Yaga, Death the Kid is captured by an enemy posing as the former meister Eibon named Noah. Shortly after this incident, the meister unit Spartoi is formed at the DWMA to take down Noah, consisting of the five most talented meisters in the school.

The anime series deviates from the manga considerably after episode thirty-five. After giving the DWMA information on Arachnophobia, Medusa takes advantage of Stein's increasing madness to lure him away with her. Crona and Marie decide to search for Medusa and bring back Stein. Medusa is defeated by Maka's demon hunter attack after Crona is nearly killed. Stein goes back to the DWMA having overcome the madness within himself. Shinigami and Asura resume their fight, which results in Shinigami's defeat when Asura threatens Kid's life. Asura eats Arachne's soul, and is confronted by Kid, Black Star and Maka. In the final battle, the three defeat Asura and the world returns to normal.

Protagonists

Maka Albarn

Maka Albarn (マカ・アルバーン Maka Arubān?) is Soul's meister and main female protagonist. The two make a good team,though Maka is prone to violent outbursts when Soul does something foolish.She is a dedicated student, who always scores at the top of the class, and the daughter of a Death Scythe, known as Spirit, who she has a very strained relationship with due to his excessive flirting with other women, which lead her mother to divorce him.

Maka is a skilled scythe meister, able to utilize the Witch-Hunt and, later in the story,Demon-Hunt techniques with ease when resonating her soul with her partner, Soul.She is skilled in Soul Perception, which allows her to track souls and judge their strength. She has the potential to develop the ability to the point where she can detect witches despite their spells, which makes her a great threat to them. When resonating with Soul, the black blood from Soul also begins to affect Maka, which causes her to slowly dip into insanity if they cannot control it. She eventually develops an "anti-insanity wavelength", which allows her to repel the effects. After Soul becomes a Death Scythe, she becomes obsessed with using their new flying ability and the shape of the wings offered by her Grigori soul.

Soul Eater

Soul Evans (ソウル＝エバンス Sōru Ebansu?), called Soul Eater or Soul by his friends, is Maka's Demon Scythe partner, and the main male titular protagonist. He has a laid back attitude, and he tries to maintain a "cool" image, to which he often compares his current situation. He drives a motorcycle, which he and Maka use for transportation, and shares an apartment with her as well. They constantly bicker, often leading to confrontations, though they still work well together in battle. Soul comes from a family of skilled musicians, and his older brother, Wes Evans (ウェス エバンス Wesu Ebansu?), is a renowned violinist. Soul is a skilled pianist, and despite playing a "dark song" for Maka during their first encounter, he doesn't like to play for others and he states that he doesn't know what he is "capable of" compared Wes, who he considers to be a master of the violin.

Soul is a traditional scythe in his weapon form. He and Maka are able to use the soul resonance techniques, Witch-Hunt Slash (魔女狩り Majogari?) and Demon-Hunt Slash (魔人狩り Majingari?), which turn the blade into a extremely large crescent. Demon-Hunt carries Maka's Anti-Demon Wavelength. After becoming a Death Scythe, he is able to manipulate the length of his blade, and he becomes capable of generating wings due to Maka's "Grigori soul," though they fight over the style of the wings. Soul is infected with the black blood due to being slashed by Ragnarok, which causes him to spread insanity to Maka whenever it acts up.

Black Star

Black Star (ブラック☆スター Burakku☆Sutā?) is a descendant of the Star Ninja Clan, which was notorious for doing anything for money. They were hated and feared throughout the world, and DWMA was eventually forced to wipe them out. Black Star, an infant at the time, was the only one spared. He was taken in by Sid, and he doesn't hold a grudge over the slaughter due to the evil life his parents lived. The mark of his clan, a star tattoo on his right shoulder, causes trouble for him when people recognize it. Black Star wishes to be the center of attention and he has the goal of surpassing God in strength. He will upstage anyone who is receiving more attention than him and he constantly trains and challenges his classmates to fight, so that he can become stronger.

Black Star's weapon partner is Tsubaki, which allows him to use a number of stealth techniques in battle. He likes to make himself known, which also ruins the advantage. He fights at high speed and uses Tsubaki's transformations to his advantage. He is also skilled in unarmed combat and he can manipulate his soul wavelength, allowing him to send it through an opponent's body to damage them directly. His obsession with power eventually leads other to believe that he will follow the path of his father, White Star (ホワイト☆スター Howaito☆Sutā?) (Voiced by: Kenta Miyake), who started to devour innocent souls in his search for power and almost became a demon god before being slain.

Tsubaki

Tsubaki Nakatsukasa (中務椿 Nakatsukasa Tsubaki?) is Black Star's Shadow Weapon partner. She is a very patient and understanding person, and though she is sometimes disheartened by Black Star's attitude, she still puts up with it because she believes in him. She has a talent for cooking and has been complimented on a few occasions by her friends. Tsubaki comes from an established family of weapons descending from a weapon created by one of Arachne.

Tsubaki can become a Chain Scythe, a very large Shuriken, a Smoke Bomb to act as a diversion, a Ninja Sword, and a clone to Black Star to confuse the enemy. Normally, her older brother, Masamune (マサムネ?) (Voiced by: Hiroshi Tsuchida (Japanese), Kyle Hebert (English)), would have been the one to inherit the ability to take on multiple forms, but Tsubaki ended up inheriting the ability instead. This makes her brother extremely jealous, leading him down the path to becoming a demon god. Tsubaki reluctantly defeats him in battle and absorbs his soul, which allows her to take on his weapon form. The new form is a black katana that is initially hard for Black Star to control.

Death The Kid

Death the Kid (デス・ザ・キッド Desu Za Kiddo?), commonly referred to as "Kid", is Shinigami's son and the meister of Liz and Patti. He suffers from obsessive-compulsive disorder, which hinders him in his daily life and battles. He believes anything symmetrical is beautiful and if something is off by even the slightest measurement, he will try to correct it right away. He spends hours on a single task, such as arranging his house or filing Liz's nails. He constantly worries that something is slightly off, and he will go all the way back to check, even during missions. He becomes depressed and sickly if something is too asymmetrical, and he becomes obsessed with anything he finds to be perfectly symmetrical. He doesn't actually have to collect souls due to his heritage, but he wishes to do it on his own even if he has double the workload by having two weapons.

Kid holds his guns upside-down and pulls the triggers with his pinkies, and he refuses to fight with a single weapon as it would not be symmetrical. Kid is also able to fight without Liz and Patti through unique martial arts stances that focus on chops, kicks, and hammer blows. He has three white lines on one side of his head, and he becomes very depressed whenever someone talks about them, as they are not symmetrical. They are called Sanzu Lines, which increase his own power and the power of his weapons if they connect. After becoming sickly or distracted in battle, he has to be forced to focus by Liz and Patti, and he often becomes enraged at enemies who lack symmetry, causing him to brutally attack them. As a shinigami, he can collect souls and he has a natural resistance to spiritual forces.

Liz And Patti

Elizabeth "Liz" Thompson (リズ（エリザベス）・トンプソン Rizu (Erizabesu) Tonpuson?) and Patricia "Patti" Thompson (パティー（パトリシア）・トンプソン Patī (Patorishia) Tonpuson?) are two sisters, who take the form of Twin Guns and pair up with Kid. Liz is the older sister and much more mature than Patti. She is very cowardly and cynical, and she finds Kid's perfectionist attitude annoying. Patti is very naive and childlike, speaking like a small child and finding amusement in very trivial things. She constantly laughs, even during extreme danger, and she believes everything to be a game. She is not very smart, and while testing, spends her time making her test papers into an origami giraffe. She often shows a psychotic rage in order to encourage her sister, though she quickly switches back to her carefree self. They used to live on streets of Brooklyn, where they would mug people in order to survive, though they joined Kid after admiring his dignified soul. Patti is a skilled martial artist and each sister can wield the other in their weapon forms.

Franken Stein

Franken Stein (フランケン・シュタイン Furanken Shutain?), commonly known as Stein, is considered to be the most powerful meister to ever graduate from the DWMA. He views the world as his own place to experiment, and he constantly forces back urges of insanity that compel him to dissect everything. He loves to experiment, even going so far as to place a giant bolt through his own head, which he occasionally turns while thinking. He is the former partner of Death Scythe, who is very wary of Stein due to various experiments performed upon him. He starts to note that he cannot control his sanity after the Asura is released, which causes him to hallucinate and act extremely reclusive.

Despite being a meister, he is very formidable in hand to hand combat because of his understanding of soul wavelengths. He can match his own wavelength to that of his opponent to disrupt them, release it as a powerful current, create shields, and immobilize the enemy. He is also extremely skilled as a scythe wielder, and he can partner with Spirit with ease. Stein also partners with Marie Mjölnir (マリー・ミョルニル Marī Myoruniru?) (Voiced by: Chieko Honda), the Death Scythe in charge of Oceania, in order to help calm him with her soothing wavelength. She is obsessed with the idea of marriage and retiring, and according to Asuza, Stein is her first love. She also had a former relationship with Beater Joe and wishes to find his murderer. Her weapon form is that of a small tonfa with a lightning insignia on the front. She can utilize a technique called "Izuna" to channel electricity into her meister's motor nerves, dramatically increasing their athletic ability. Her weapon form is much larger in the anime, and she has a "Redemption Wavelength", which can cure insanity

Antagonists

Arachne

Arachne (アラクネ Arakune?), also known as "The Heretic Witch", is the eldest of the three Gorgon Sisters. She is "mother of all Demon Weapons" and the leader of "Arachnophobia", a massive organization that uses Baba Yaga castle as its main base of operations. She was defeated by Shinigami hundreds of years before the beginning of the series, which causes her to seal her soul into a golem guarded by Giricco until she is able to revive herself. She doesn't get along with her younger sister, Medusa, and she prefers to manipulate the enemy from afar rather than face them in direct combat. She is able to immobilize enemies with spider silk, imprison someone within their own mind and force them to face their own fears, and use a number of spiders for reconnaissance. In the manga, she attempts to turn herself into an incarnation of insanity, so that she can absorb Asura. Her soul is defeated by Maka and her body is taken by Medusa, though residual aspects of Arachne are still present. In the anime, she convinces Asura to join her in order to spread insanity, though he eventually kills her and eats her soul.

Asura

Asura (阿修羅 Ashura?) is the first demon god and the main antagonist of Soul Eater. He was Shinigami's strongest subordinate eight hundred years before the events of the series. Asura was extremely fearful and trusted no one, causing him to develop quirky habits such as covering his face and head with countless long scarves and wearing five or six shirts over his body. To quell his fear he became obsessed with power, eating numerous innocent souls and his own weapon partner, Vajra. To stop him, Shinigami ripped off Asura's skin and used it as a container to imprison him beneath Death City. He is eventually released by Medusa and he goes off into hiding while his insanity spreads through the world. He is sought out and comforted by Arachne in the anime, though he eventually kills her after becoming frightened of feeling close to her.

Asura can use his skin, which he forms into "scarfs" wrapped around his body, they can also be used to attack and defend. He is able to release enough of his soul wavelength through a single finger to easily knock out Kid and he can take attacks from Black Star without flinching. He can cough up Vajra to use in battle, and he can fire powerful beams of energy. His existence spreads insanity feverishly, and it has very negative effects on the world.

Crona

Crona (クロナ Kurona?) is Medusa's child, who is abused and experimented on in an attempt to make Crona into a demon god. She instills upon Crona obedience and madness as a child by forcing Crona to kill small animals with being thrown into a dark room for days as a punishment for disobeying. She also replaces Crona's blood with "black blood", a substance that hardens to protect Crona from physical damage. Ragnarok (ラグナロク Ragunaroku?) (Voiced by: Keiji Himeno), a demon blade, is also melted into the blood, which gives him a symbiotic relationship with Crona. He constantly picks on and belittles Crona, which reinforces Crona's shy and naive personality. Crona finds it impossible to interact with other people, often hiding in dark corners to ease anxiety. During Crona's time at DWMA after the supposed death of Medusa, Maka and her friends become very close with Crona, and because of Maka's support, Crona is much more happy.

Crona has little will to actually fight, so Medusa places a spell on Crona to increase aggression. She sends Crona to have Ragnarok devour as many souls as possible in an attempt to make them into a demon god. Ragnarok is initially barely the size of Crona's head, but as he devours more souls, he eventually becomes larger than Crona's entire body and gains the ability to grow large wings. Ragnarok can control Crona's black blood, which allows him to use it as a projectile after it leaves the body, and he can instantly harden the blood to reduce damage from impacts. His sword form has a mouth that can scream in order to cause pain to opponents and gather souls. They can also fire solid sound waves. As with his humanoid form, the sword's size and power depend on the number of souls he has eaten.

Giricco

Giricco (ギリコ Giriko?) is a weapon, who serves as an ally of Arachne. He lives for fighting and destroying, and he has used a technique related to creating golems to pass on his memories in genetics, allowing him to have lived thirty lifetimes while awaiting for Arachne to awaken. He hates the DWMA, claiming that he doesn't wish to be used by a meister, and fights alone for that reason. He forms a rivalry with Justin Law, though after Arachne's defeat, he joins Law under Noah. Giricco's weapon form is a chainsaw, which can be used by his golem creations, though he generally changes his limbs into the blades. He uses a gear-shift system to increase his power, and by changing both of his feet, he can quickly move across the ground. He can also cause a chain to appear on his body to act as armor, and he can stretch it around his body and rapidly rotate to attack enemies. He is skilled in the creation of golems, and he can quickly make them out of snow if he wishes.

Justin Law

Justin Law (ジャスティン＝ロウ Jasutin Rō?) is the youngest student in DWMA history to become a Death Scythe, something which he achieved at the age of thirteen and without the aid of a partner. He dresses in the garb of a Catholic priest and is a devout servant of his god. He also constantly listens to techno music and lip reads and watches for hand signals to understand people. He travels by means of a dune buggy with a coffin on wheels connected to it. Though he initially seems to worship Shinigami, he eventually reveals to be working under Noah as an agent for Asura. His weapon form is a guillotine, and he fights by changing various body parts into parts of his weapon form. He can simply use blades, grab enemies with the headlock of the guillotine, and by praying to increase his soul wavelength, he can fire an energy attack called "Law Abiding Silver Gun".

Medusa

Medusa (メデューサ Medyūsa?) is a witch, who infiltrates DWMA under the guise of a kind nurse to awaken Asura and continue her research on the black blood. She is Crona's mother, and through years of abuse and research, she infuses Crona with the black blood and Ragnarok, and manipulates Crona into a ruthless killer. She often claims to care for Crona, though she simply views Crona as a tool to expend at any point. She sees the world as a giant experimentation ground, which is what causes her to awaken Asura. She is killed by Stein, whose similar personality interests her, but she manages to scatter her soul and reform it into a snake. Afterward, she posses a young girl named Rachel and uses "Brew" as leverage to form a truce with DWMA. In the anime, she convinces Stein to leave with her, though Crona, Marie, and Maka eventually destroy her soul. In the manga, she goes with a group of students into Arachnophobia, and after the defeat of her sister, Arachne, she takes over her discarded body and betrays DWMA. Medusa later goes into hiding, continuing her experiments with the black blood on Crona in the hopes her child will eventually merge with the kishin Asura.

She uses magic based around snakes, and her chant is "Nake snake cobra cobabra." She has thousands of snakes within her body, which can turn into numerous "Vector Arrows" to pierce the enemy, act as an upward tornado-like shield, whip the opponent, or be placed into the body of someone else, which allows her to either blow them up or communicate with them telepathically. She can create "Vector Plates", large arrows on the ground that forcibly throw anything on them in the direction that the arrow is pointing. She either uses them to propel herself towards the enemy to engage in close combat or to fling an attacker away from her. She can also place a "Vector Boost" upon someone else, which allows them to double the power of a strike or spell.

Noah

Noah (ノア Noa?) is a man, who refers to himself as a collector of "everything." He possesses the Book of Eibon and also uses his name due to "brand recognition." He is able to use the book to absorb anything or anyone he wishes into an alternate realm, and he believes that by "collecting" everything that he will essentially become "everything." He can also summon a shadowy worm-like creature from his book to attack beings not worth collecting. He works with Arachne for a time, though he eventually betrays her and reveals he is allied with the kishin Asura. However, Noah's true intention is to protect Asura while he recovers until Noah himself can absorb him. Noah appears in video game Soul Eater: Monotone Princess, where he assists Ponera under the name Grimoire (グリモア Gurimoa?), and he speaks the chant "Worm Moire Grimoire".

Noah recruits Justin Law, Giricco, and the Pierrot (道化師 Dōkeshi?), an incarnation of insanity similar to Asura, to help further his goals. He is also assisted by Gopher (ゴフェル Goferu?) a neurotic man, who wishes himself to be "collected" by Noah and hates anyone who has the "privilege" to be sought out by him. He can launch large balls of energy from his body and he can fly by using a Grigori type soul "filled with evil magic."

Other Characters

Blair

Blair (ブレア Burea?) is a cat with strong magical powers, allowing her to take on a humanoid form. She is initially mistaken as a witch by Maka and Soul, who kill her. After the soul causes the transformation into a Death Scythe to fail, she reveals they only took one of her "nine lives" and moves in with them. In her cat form she is a black cat with a witch hat. In her humanoid form she is a busty young woman with her witch hat. She used to live in a giant Jack-O Lantern style Pumpkin. She takes up a part time job in a night club and hangs around town. She uses pumpkin magic by chanting "Pum Pumkin-Pumkin". She can launch pumpkins like cannon balls or pumpkin-shaped explosions.

Death Scythe

Death Scythe (デス・サイズ Desu Saizu?), whose real name is Spirit (スピリット Supiritto?), is Shinigami's current weapon and Maka's father. He takes the title of Death Scythe as he is the only one who is actually a scythe in his weapon form, though his friends still call him Spirit. He is divorced from his wife and former meister, Kami, who becomes fed up with his constant flirting with other women. This strains his relationship with Maka, which causes him to become depressed whenever she rejects him. He is very protective of her, and he has fond memories of her early childhood. He is also the former weapon of Stein, though he is very wary of him due to experiments performed upon him. In weapon form, Spirit is a large, plain black scythe with the handle resembling a cross.

Eibon

Eibon (エイボン Eibon?) is known as a member of Shinigami's "Eight Powerful Warriors", who served under him hundreds of years before the series. The only details known about him are that he created Brew, the Book of Eibon, and the other demon tools, and that he wore a large coat and mask that covered him completely. Noah uses his name and he is in possession of the Book of Eibon. In the anime, he aligned with Arachne to search for a form of immortality to curse a lover of a fatal illness, and after failing, he made himself into the key to utilize Brew as penance.

Enrique

Enrique (猿里華 Enrike?) is the meister of Tezca Tlipoca (テスカ・トリポカ Tesuka・Toripoka?), the Death Scythe in charge of South America. Enrique is a monkey who wears trousers, a t-shirt, and a baseball hat. He constantly speaks by saying "gau", which his partner is able to understand coherently. Tezca wears a large bear mask over his head, and he constantly laughs at whatever Enrique is saying. He turns into a "Demon Mirror", which wraps around his meister's right leg.

Excalibur

Excalibur (エクスカリバー Ekusukaribā?) is known as a legendary weapon that is unmatched by any other. He can be used by anyone, though upon finding him, most are unable to stand being around him for a long period of time. He has a large ego, ignores others while they attempt to speak by calling them "fools", and he goes on long, nonsensical rants. He demands that his meister perform one thousands tasks, such as a daily five-hour reading of his own book. His humanoid form resembles a cartoonish anthropomorphic creature with a very long snout, dressed in a white suit and top hat. Hero, a loser student who would be considered popular at any other school, manages to satisfy Excalibur's demands for a time, which grants him instant teleportation, flight using large wings of light, and power attacks that cause explosions. While not with a meister, Excalibur spends his time in a rock in the middle of a shallow underground lake, which annoys the fairies that inhabit the area.

Beater Joe

Beater Joe (ブッ叩き・ジョー Buttataki Jō?), also known as BJ (ビージェイ Bījei?), is a man with a very powerful soul perception that allows him to detect if people are lying, which earns him the nickname "Mole Hunter", and get around a witch's "soul protect spell", which makes them consider him to be very dangerous. He is the ex-boyfriend of Marie Mjölnir, having broken up with her because he fears his abilities will grow to the point where he can see through her. He is murdered by Justin Law under the Asura's orders. In the anime, he is a member of the technological branch of the DWMA, who comes to Death City to deal with demon tools. He loves coffee, especially Uncle Bob's Rumba Coffee, and he is utterly disgusted by the instant coffee.

Kim Diehl

Kim Diehl (キム・ディール Kimu Dīru?) is a lamp meister and partner to Jacqueline O'Lantern Dupré (ジャクリーン・オー・ランタン・デュプレ Jakuriin Ō Rantan Dupure?) (Voiced by: Kanae Oki). Kim is actually a witch, who wishes to get away from that lifestyle. Jacqueline knows that Kim is a witch, and she goes with her to the assemblies. They both join under Arachne after Medusa makes Kim's heritage known to the DWMA staff, but after Arachne's defeat, they are both allowed back. Jacqueline's weapon form can spew fire and extend into a broom to allow Kim to fly. Kim specializes in regeneration magic, which goes against the usual destructive nature of witches.

Kirikou Rung

Kirikou Rung (キリク・ルング Kiriku Rungu?) is the meister of Pot of Fire & Pot of Thunder (ポット・オブ・ファイア＆ポット・オブ・サンダー Potto obu Faia & Potto obu Sandā?), two small twins who take the form of large gloves capable of generating fire and thunder. They are "earth shamans" from Brazil, who can hear the "earth's voice." Kirikou often teams up with Ox during missions, and he is very quick to act upon his impulses. His attacks emphasize on the raw punching power of his elemental pots, and their soul resonance can increase the power of just a single one or both at the same time. Kirikou's name is inspired from the character of Kirikou which is a movie the author enjoys.

Little Ogre

Little Ogre (小鬼 Ko Oni?) is a strange imp in the form of a devil who becomes part of Soul's soul after he is infected by Crona's black blood. The Little Ogre constantly tempts Soul with power in exchange for his sanity, and he does his best to spread the influence of the blood to others, such as Maka and anyone performing a chain resonance with the two of them. He is dressed in a tuxedo, his arms are longer than his body, and he has a habit of biting all of his fingers when he is excited. He resides in a room with a black and red tiled floor and red curtains for walls listening to a jazz record that constantly skips. He uses Soul's affiliation for music to help him spread his influence.

Shinigami

Shinigami (死神?) (Lord Death in the English dub) is the personification of Death and the founder and leader of the Death Weapon Meister Academy. He forms the academy after sealing Asura, a former disciple turned into a kishin, under Death City and binding his own soul to the area to keep him sealed. He cannot leave the city, so he uses his trained meisters to collect evil souls around the globe. He prefers to remain in the "Death Room" in the DWMA, where he oversees the school and gives out orders to the faculty and students, and he can be contacted through any reflective surface by writing a number. He bickers with Death Scythe, his personal weapon, and he often hits him over the head with his "Shinigami Chop." He used to speak with a very serious tone and wore a realistic skull mask, but to avoid scaring children, he wears a cartoonish mask and speaks in a playful tone.

Sid Barett

Sid Barett (死人（シド）・バレット Shido Baretto?) is a DWMA teacher, who is turned into a zombie after his death by Dr. Stein. He gives his teaching position to Stein, and does a number of missions for DWMA instead. He often talks about the "man he once was" even though he hasn't actually changed beyond having blue skin. He is part of the team responsible for the annihilation of the Star Clan, and he takes in Black Star and raises him. He is a three star knife meister, who partners with Mirra Neigus (Voiced by: Junko Noda), the school nurse who replaces Medusa. She is covered in bandages and she becomes a combat knife. He is very proficient at tunneling, using this skill for sneak attacks and escaping enemies. He can also create coffin-shaped holes to use as escape routes for others.
